CHEBUKATI LAID TO REST.

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati was laid to rest on March 8, 2025, at his Sabata home in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County. The burial ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries, including President William Ruto, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula. The government had earlier advised mourners to refrain from wearing political party regalia and engaging in political activities during the funeral to maintain decorum. During the memorial service for former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, his daughter, Rachel Nekesa, delivered an emotional tribute highlighting her father's integrity, resilience, and the profound impact he had on her life. Rachel described her father as a record-breaker who defied odds and consistently stood for the truth, even when it meant being an outlier. She recalled his constant motivation throughout her academic journey and golf competitions, often advising her to "plan it and then when you go to bed, dream about doing it well." This guidance instilled in her the power of positive thinking, a principle she continues to apply in her life. She also shared how her father celebrated her achievements more than she did herself and maintained close contact during challenging times, such as the general elections, always ensuring he was available to her despite his demanding schedule. In her tribute, Rachel expressed her intention to pass on the values her father instilled in her to her future children, emphasizing that being his daughter was the greatest honor of her life. his wife, Mary Wanyonyi Chebukati, delivered a heartfelt tribute that deeply moved the attendees. She recounted their journey together, which began in 1988 when they met in Mombasa. At that time, Mary was attending a training sponsored by the National Treasury, and Wafula was running his law firm, Wanyonyi and Company Advocates. Their relationship evolved from professional interactions to a romantic courtship, culminating in their marriage on April 21, 1990, at Mariakani Christian Centre. Mary reminisced about the early days of their marriage, highlighting Wafula's dedication as a husband and father. She fondly recalled how he would drop her off at work every morning, and despite occasional disagreements, his sense of humor would always lighten the mood. She also noted his unwavering support during his 2007 campaign for the Saboti Constituency MP seat, a venture that, despite its outcome, fueled his later application for the IEBC Chairmanship. Reflecting on his health challenges, Mary shared the profound impact of his diagnosis with glioblastoma two years prior to his passing. She expressed that the experience gave new meaning to their marital vows, particularly the commitment to stand by each other "in sickness and in health." Mary emphasized that she remained by his side throughout his illness, underscoring the depth of their bond. President Ruto lauded Chebukati as a man of exceptional character who could not be intimidated, blackmailed, or bribed. He highlighted Chebukati's pivotal role in overseeing transparent and democratic elections, particularly during the contentious 2022 general elections, stating that his firm stand prevented the country from descending into chaos. The President emphasized that Chebukati's leadership set high standards of integrity within the electoral body, marking him as a national hero who consistently prioritized the country's well-being. He noted that Chebukati's intelligence and courage were instrumental in upholding the principles of democracy in Kenya. In honor of Chebukati's legacy, President Ruto pledged to support the construction of the Chebukati Centre of Excellence at Sabata Secondary School. He acknowledged Chebukati's innovative use of information and communication technology to ensure electoral integrity and expressed hope that the center would continue to promote similar advancements.
