Djibouti's Ali Youssouf takes the AUC chair
In a closely contested election during the 38th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Djibouti's Foreign Minister, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, was elected as the new Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) on February 15, 2025. Youssouf secured the position after seven rounds of voting, obtaining 33 out of 55 possible votes.
The election saw Youssouf competing against Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya, and Richard Randriamandrato, ex-Foreign Minister of Madagascar. Odinga, a prominent figure in Kenyan politics who has sought the presidency multiple times, was considered a strong contender. However, Youssouf's extensive diplomatic experience and strategic campaigning garnered him the necessary support.
Youssouf has served as Djibouti's Foreign Minister since 2005 and was previously the country's Ambassador to Egypt. His tenure has spanned three presidential administrations, highlighting his enduring presence in regional diplomacy.
As the new AUC Chairperson, Youssouf faces several pressing challenges, including addressing military juntas in West Africa and managing violent rebellions in regions like eastern Congo. The AU has faced criticism over its handling of armed conflicts across the continent, and Youssouf's leadership will be pivotal in navigating these complex issues.
The election process underscored the AU's commitment to democratic principles and regional representation. Youssouf's victory reflects a strategic shift and the collective decision of member states to entrust him with steering the continent towards greater unity and stability.
